What can’t we have intel processors for smartphones?

If we look back at history, we can say that there was only one tech company producing processors for all of the world’s computers. The name of that tech company was intel. Intel achieved its respect in computers when a computer run by intel beat all others in a race that determined the computer’s best processor.


From that point onwards, Intel put all its focus into the markets of computers. Intel used to make processors for computers. Then slowly and they moved towards innovations and worked in making the processors smaller in size. As a result, they successfully turned the large processors into microchips that were fitted on the motherboard. These chips allowed innovation in other tech companies such as hp, dell, and Acer. These companies then developed laptops that were slimmer and much more portable than the other desktop computers. The smaller and compact size of these processor chips allowed the computer manufacturing companies to fit the processors into laptops and other computer-related devices.


We can say that intel focused on the market related to computers and nothing else. That is the reason why they became dominant over companies, and you might not have heard of any other company other than intel that makes processors. As a result, we can say that historically intel has been producing processors for computers and focused on the computer market, and did not have an interest in the cellphone-related market.

Politics in the company:


Intel was not just one person ruling over a bunch of people. If you think companies run like that, you are fooling yourself. Companies do not run like that. A company is run by the collective efforts and brotherhood of many intellectuals working together. These people provide new ideas for innovation and help the company in producing better and faster products. Moreover, not all of these people need to have a positive approach towards the company. Some of them might have a negative approach and might be driven by jealousy to destroy the company.


There were stories of such people in intel company in the past. Some people say that there were a few people in the group of intellectuals, and they provided the head of the company a report. In that report, they informed the company’s head that intel should also start focusing on the cellphone market. They also provided a list of benefits related to that step if the company took it.


However, some people in that company were politically strong inside and outside the company. They were against this decision, and there were several reasons for this. They feared innovations and believed that if this step were taken, the company would not make enough profits, and the company should stick to what it is good at. Moreover, there was also a story that steve jobs had approached intel to make processors for his newly introduced iPhone. He also requested them to make processor chips that sucked up lesser energy. However, he was turned down by the intel company. Later on, he made processors of his own that beat Intel’s processors; after that, none dared to move intel towards the cellphone market.

Too big for cellphones:


If you open up cellphones, you must have seen the big blue-chip embedded into the computer’s motherboard. That chip must have intel written on it and is called the microprocessor. Intel makes many fo chips, and the most famous ones are the I series that consists of core i3, core i5, and Core i9 processors. These chips were made to enhance the Personne of computers. The size did not matter, but the speed did as computers had to be used for many difficult tasks, and these tasks needed immense processor power.


However, speed did not matter when we relate it to mobile phones. The mobile phones had to be used for purposes such as calls or light games. They did not need the power, but the size of the processor had great importance. Mobile phones are said to be compact and easy to use. Moreover, the latest mobile phones do not have a single function that is receiving calls and texts. They have more to it than that. Cellphones have different features such as alarms, high-quality cameras. Fingerprints, voice recognition, etc., these functions need space inside the phones. Intel makes microprocessors for computers, and those are bigger. If we try to fit those microprocessors in the mobile phones, they will not fit as they are bigger.

The first problem is that the intel processor will consume the size

Even if we manage to fit them, we will have to face two other problems. The first problem is that the intel processor will consume the size, and we will have no space left to include the features of other functions. As a result, they would have to be left out. Now you want to go towards the production of motorcycles. No company can immediately set up a separate factory for building motorcycles, so it will use the car factory to make the same motorcycles.

The intel company used the same strategy

These machines were then used to make smaller computer chips for mobile phones. While producing these small intel chips, they face two problems. The factory workers had been working with the company for ages, and they were familiar with the methods of making intel processor chips for desktop computers only. Moreover, if the company had to make newer chips, they would have to hire more workers or hire a professional to train them. It means that the company will have to pay more to the trainers to train the staff.

As a result, we can say that Intel did not make a processor for smartphones because it was proving to be very costly for the company. It means that the factories were made so that they could make processors only for mobile phones. Moreover, there was another reason too why snapdragon proved to be better. The staff hired for the companies was trained specially for making processor chips for mobile phones.


It meant that the phones using intel chips were expensive, and the phones using snapdragon chips were much cheaper. The customers slowly and gradually shifted towards mobile phones that used snapdragon chips, and there were a few reasons for this. One reason was that the phone was expensive, and so the customers would look for phones that had lower prices. If mobile phones having intel chips reduced their prices, the company would have to reduce many phone features. People would prefer cell phones that had the latest features rather than phones having very few features.

Intel had a great collaboration with Microsoft, and these companies had been working together for years. The computers and laptops made were run by windows and Intel processors. The reason for that was that these cellphones and tablets had windows as their operating system software. These tablets were mostly laptops. The laptops could be used as traditional laptops as well as tablets. As a result, people dislike using Intel processors in their cellphones and stuck to processors made by the snapdragon. On seeing this, intel stopped producing the Intel processors.

Intel processors use more energy:


Mobile phones’ function is to carry out communication, but nowadays, cell phones have multiple features such as cameras, audio recorder, fingerprint, face sensor, etc. As a result, the cellphone companies had to upgrade their batteries to keep the phone alive throughout the day and allow them to carry out different functions. It showed the cellphone companies tried their best to provide battery timing.


However, Intel processors used to consume a lot of power. Initially, these chips used the same technology that was used by computers and laptops. Hence they consumed a lot of energy, and the user could not even use the phones for a day as they would die in between. Intel tried its best to make the processor chips compatible with mobile phones, but it just was not working out for them.

Moreover, they had to invest more to build better and stronger batteries to support the processor. A large investment was also required to build these batteries, and hence it cost a lot of money to be spent on batteries. To cover these costs, the intel company would have to sell their mobile phones at higher prices to cover the costs and profit. As a result, people refrained from buying these expensive phones and go on to cheaper alternatives. It gains them popularity in not providing better battery timing.

Non-compatibility of applications with intel:


It was one of the issues with intel processors. The android cell phones had been using Snapdragon processors, and they were also compatible with the apps provided to them. The phones with intel processors were not compatible with these apps, so most of these apps could not be run on these mobile phones. Moreover, these apps are given new updates each month, and it was difficult for users having intel processors to update these apps. You must have notice users with Windows phones complaining about the outdated apps they were using. It is because it is difficult for these mobile phones to keep their app updated.



We can hereby conclude that smartphones not having intel processors are that they are just not compatible with cell phones. The main reason for this is that the production process was not suitable for making intel chips for android and proved to be very costly for the people and the company.
